The Treasury Department will now extend the April 15 filing deadline, according to Treasury Sec. Steven Mnuchin. This announcement came via a tweet. Presumably, a formal announcement will be forthcoming from Treasury. Earlier this week, an extension of time to pay some 2019 taxes and 2020 first-quarter estimated payments was granted for the same 90-day period.
In light of this most recent announcement, taxpayers now have until July 15 to file or extend their 2019 tax returns, at which time their 2019 tax liabilities and 2020 first-quarter estimated tax payments will be due in full. Absent any current guidance to the contrary, second-quarter 2020 estimated payments remain due on June 15.
This extension does not automatically apply to state and local payment requirements. Please visit our state tax-filing extension matrix to see if your state has extended its deadlines in response to COVID-19.
