Baker Tilly served as a strategic advisor for a large orthopedic company that acquired a robotic arm- assisted surgical device. The device uses a preoperative computerized tomography (CT) scan as a map for the physician to reduce intraoperative complications.
The client needed a document that combined its clinical and economic literature into a concise document for payer distribution. Furthermore, the surgical device required additional research for its applications for total knee arthroplasty, unicompartmental knee arthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty.
Baker Tilly was involved in multiple aspects of the market access strategy to drive market uptake and disseminate real-world evidence (RWE). Baker Tilly synthesized the evidence into one concise document, referred to as a dossier, to share with commercial payers. Additionally, a longitudinal analysis was executed to leverage Medicare fee-for-service and commercial claims data to contribute to the literature for multiple applications of the device. Baker Tilly structured the analysis as “episode of care” models to correlate with the market for programs such as comprehensive joint replacements (CJR).
The dossier was distributed to health plan contacts that provided insight on the literature for the device. Baker Tilly also published four peer-reviewed articles highlighting the clinical and economic findings with the use of the robotic arm-assisted joint arthroplasty compared to the traditional manual procedures. Finally, the company further increased its industry presence by having Baker Tilly submit seven abstracts and by presenting those accepted in conferences, such as American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and the International Society for Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery, concerning the economic and clinical findings identified through the real-world data analysis.
