This company is an electronics manufacturer in the wireless communication industry.
This large multi-national company was informed, via their whistleblowing process, that an individual was accused of stealing IT assets, vendor fraud and general employee misconduct. Given General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the level of seniority of the individual, the review had to be conducted covertly and was handled by the CEO and the in-house counsel.
Using digital forensics applications, Baker Tilly created a number of device images that included computers, cell phones, communication/chat software, employee proximity card readers and witness statement taking. These images were then used to perform analysis to piece together any activity that supported the whistleblowing alert. A number of external data sources were incorporated such as their employee record file, shipping information, accounting information from internal financial ERP, publicly available information, vendor information and computer usage logs. The information was parsed through a KNN clustering and semantic search tool to process the text narratives and structured shipping data. The output was then used to visualize patterns and identify root causes.
The analysis helped demonstrate that the whistleblowing events were accurate, and the information collated and presented was used to prosecute the employee. This analysis was performed within an accelerated timeline and, given this was one of the main factors, the client was pleased with the research and analysis.
