Jim Lawson is a managing director in our international tax services group, a practice within Baker Tilly’s specialty tax team. With more than 25 years of professional experience, Jim specializes in international taxation. He currently services multinational enterprises across various industries and serves as a technical subject matter expert on international tax matters. That professional experience builds upon a prior six years of distinguished military service. A valued team member since 2011, Jim joined the Baker Tilly team after a long tenure in Big Four public accounting.

  • Specialization in international tax planning, which includes but is not limited to global tax minimization; cash repatriation strategies; foreign tax credit management; cross-border structuring/restructuring and merger integration/legal entity rationalization; cross-border debt restructuring/rationalization; tax optimized global supply chain alignment; Base Erosion and Anti-Abuse Tax (BEAT), Global Intangible Low-Taxed Income (GILTI), subpart F, and Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax Act (FIRPTA) analysis and planning; modeling/impact assessment for prospective tax law changes (e.g., implementation of a global minimum tax under the OECD’s Pillar Two framework); U.S. and foreign income tax withholding and tax treaty analysis; and Foreign-Derived Intangible Income (FDII) and Interest Charge Domestic International Sales Corporation (IC-DISC) export incentives
  • Specialization in international tax compliance for both outbound U.S. and inbound foreign multinational enterprises
  • Application of ASC 740 – Accounting for Income Taxes in the international context
  • International tax controversy and liability management
  • Complementary experience in transfer pricing matters
  • Established performance record in the provision of value-added tax services to private equity funds and portfolio companies across the life-cycle continuum
  • Country tax desk liaison for secondments to/from other Baker Tilly International member firms
  • Completion of a two-year foreign assignment in Germany
